Hello future readers,
This afternoon, Cheryl invited me and Sunny to go to the roller skating rink with her. There is no roller skating rink here in Springfield, so Cheryl's mom drove us over to the next town where there's a groovy rink called the Rollerama!
Wow, was this place ever big! Lotsa room to skate! Some people rent skates to use, but we all brought our own. We took off our sneakers, put on our skates, and got ready to roll!
The DJ was playing some outta site records! Michael Jackson, KC & The Sunshine Band, Elton John, The Ohio Players. And we were having a dynamite time trying to skate, dance and race each other!
I grabbed Sunny's hands and started to slowly skate backwards. It isn't easy, but it's fun!
Cheryl wanted to come over and hold hands with us, but she couldn't stop and she ran right into us! We crashed into a big pile! Ouch!
Luckily no one was really hurt. I guess we broke each other's fall! We were even laughing about it! When we got up, Cheryl grabbed me by the hand and we skated together.
Then the DJ called for a conga line! We had fun skating to that!
Cheryl's mom wanted to get some pictures of us by ourselves. Cheryl and I were being goofy and posing. Sunny just wanted to skate.
After a while, we were getting pretty hungry, so Cheryl's mom treated us to hot dogs and soda! Far out!
Well, our session was over, so it was time to go home. I had a super time! So did Cheryl and Sunny. We had so much fun that we all conked out in the car on the way home.
Are there still roller rinks in the future? I love roller skating, and I'm really glad Cheryl invited Sunny and I to go. I hope we can do it again really soon!
Until next time, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to say that there are still roller rinks in 2015. I love your rainbow shirt with matching knee-highs and skates!
Fawn
Thanks Fawn!
DeleteGroovy! I'm glad people can still go to roller rinks to skate. I only wish there was one here in Springfield!
Julie,
ReplyDeleteI just noticed that in Sunny's solo photo, it looks like she is missing a front tooth. I hope that means the tooth fairy is scheduled to make a visit and not that she got a tooth knocked out while playing roller derby.
Fawn
Uh...no, Sunny isn't missing any teeth. Maybe a shadow on the snapshot?
DeleteThat's a relief! Sunny doesn't seem like a roller derby kinda girl.
ReplyDeleteFawn
Adorable post! I love the knee socks and skates. Sunny looks really cute. Yay for the 70s! :)
ReplyDeleteThey still have skating rinks in the future, just not as many. I always loved roller skating when I was a kid. They used to play a game at ours called "The Corner Game"--it was sort of like musical chairs. At the end they would pull a number out and that person won something, usually free food or an admission to the rink for another time.
ReplyDeleteGroovy! My mom says she remembers playing that game, too, but she never won anything.
DeleteWow, Julie! It sounds like you, Cheryl and Sunny had a really fun time! I hope you didn't fall down too much! I've been skating a few times, and the last time I kept falling down-haha!
ReplyDelete*Sunny
Haha! The only time we fell is when Cheryl ran into us!
DeleteHey Julie,
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy reading about all your adventures with your friends--you always do such fun things! The roller rink looks like a blast. I like how all your stripes go together: shirt, socks, and skates. It's really colorful and reminds of Yikes, Stripes chewing gum! (Yum) Thanks for your groovy posts that make me wish I could go back in time again and be one of your friends in Springfield. I am looking forward to next time!

Hi Alice,
DeleteI'm glad you're enjoying my time capsule. We had such a good time at The Rollerama. I wish there was a skating rink here in Springfield. I was gonna wear my David Cassidy t-shirt, but my mom said I should wear bright colors to make it easy for Cheryl's mom to find me if the rink got too crowded. Yikes Stripes Gum? Do you mean Fruit Stripe Gum? Wow, they still have that in the future? Did they change the name? I like it, but it doesn't make very good bubbles.
It IS Fruit Stripes, but the old TV commercial--back in your day, or a couple of years earlier, when I was your age-- used to have cartoon animals, and the jingle said something like "Yikes, Stripes, Fruit Strip Gum! It's fruity, it's fun!" or something like that, so we always used to call it Yikes Stripes gum. It is still around in the future, but hard to find. I bet your David Cassidy tee shirt is really cool.

Oh OK, I may have seen that commercial, but I can't remember. I was wearing my David Cassidy t-shirt when I got 20 commendation cards back in February. You can look at the snapshots from that time to see what my shirt looks like.
DeleteWhat?! The DJ didn't play any Bay City Rollers?! Humpf!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great day of skating. Yes, there are still roller rinks. thankfully my favorite is still in business, but I haven't gone in a long time. They had a large main skate area and a smaller area for beginners. The funny part about the beginners' section is you had to cross the main floor and go up a few stairs to get to it. By the time you got there you'd be ready to hit the main. It was kind of like the kiddie pool parents could take the little kids there and still watch the older kids skate.
I tried the limbo once, but I'm not a strong skater so I stayed away from the games, but I do remember the musical chairs game, must be a standard.
Even though the Rollerama was outta site, we didn't really play any games. The conga line was all they did. There weren't many little kids, but there were a few "wall walkers" who held the rails or the wall as they skated very slowly.
DeleteYes, Julie, there are still roller skating rinks. they are not built much anymore but they still exist. In the next town over there's a rink called Roll-A-Bout Skating center. In the 70s, where you are in time, have you ever been to a drive in move theatre?-Kirsten.
ReplyDeleteYes, I love the drive-in. It's only open in the summer, though.
Deleteok! my school GPA is a 1.5 . How about yours?-kirsten
