The Candy Store

Hello future readers!

Every Friday at school is test day. We have our weekly Spelling test and Math test on Fridays. I'm pretty good at spelling, but I have to admit, I'm pretty crummy at Math. Sometimes it's hard for me to remember all those number facts. And if I even look at a word problem, my head starts to spin. But this week, I got 17 out of 20 answers right on my Math test! Far out! I decided to get myself a little treat with what was left from my allowance, so I met Lisa and Sunny after school and we walked over to the candy store.

Our candy store isn't very big, but it has lotsa candy! You can also buy comic books, soda and ice-cream there.

I like coming here 'cos I can get a whole lotta candy for not a whole lotta money.

I only had 20 cents leftover from my allowance. (I get 50 cents every Saturday). Some of my friends were already there before Lisa, Sunny and I showed up.

Danny and Kyle were checking out the newest Captain America comic book.

(I hope that bubble gum doesn't pop all over Danny's face!) Ha-ha!

Cheryl was picking out her favorite sour balls.

Jason had his eye on the candy bars. Boy does he ever love chocolate!

Kim was reaching in the freezer for some ice-cream.

We all said Hi to everyone as we walked in.

Hmm...now what could I get for 20 cents? Sunny suggested a candy necklace. Yeah, I could get that. It was only a dime.

Sunny went to get her favorite soda, Orange Nehi.

I saw Kim and Cheryl checking out the comic books. Kim loves The Archies! (that's a cartoon musical group!)

Don't drop your ice-cream bar, Kim!

Cheryl likes The Archies, too! Lisa got an ice-cream cup.

(I wonder if she knows the flavors match her outfit!) Danny is trying to get Jason to loan him some money. He only had enough for the comic book, (and the gumball he got out of the machine), but now he wants some licorice, too!

Kyle's gonna buy a candy bar for him and one for his mom. She has a sweet tooth, too!

I decide just to buy the candy necklace. I wanna save room for pizza when Lisa comes over later to watch The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family with me. Are there still candy stores in the future? My mom doesn't like me to eat too much candy, 'cos it's not good for my teeth. I'll bet in the future, dentists have found a way to get rid of cavities all together and you can eat as much candy as you want! Wouldn't that be super? Gotta go now!

Until next time, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman

  1. Hi Julie. We don't have as many candy stores now as you do. But we can get our candy at the grocery store.
Great job on your math test. Math is hard, but it is something that is so useful for other jobs.

    1. I've seen candy at the grocery store too, but their prices are too high. I'd use up my allowance on 2 candy bars! I like our little candy store better. And my mom was really proud of me that I did so well on my Math test!

    2. Do you take all of your tests in class, or do you e Dr bring them home? Being homeschooled, I do all of mine at home. I have taken in-class tests before, as well.

    3. I never heard of bringing a test home, 'cos I thought that was called homework!

    4. Usually it is, but with one class I am in, we don't have time in class to take the test, so we get to take it home.

  2. Hi Julie,
This brings back such memories for me. When I was a kid one of our neighbors had a candy store in the closed-in porch on his house. He sold penny candy which was stored in a glass case. Every once in a while my mom would give me a dime and I could get a small brown bag (about a third the size of a brown lunch bag) full of candy. Most of it cost 2 pieces for a penny. We could also buy popcicles for 5 cents each and soda pop in bottles which were stored in metal refrigerated chests. He also had newspapers, bread, milk, toiletries, shoelaces, and over-the-counter medicines like aspirin. And he had a pinball machine. My favorite candy was Tootsie Rolls and my favorite flavor of popcicle was blueberry.

  3. Mmmmm, everything looks yummy! There are still candy stores in the future, but they are different now. We used to have a small "general" store in our neighborhood when I was growing up and they had the best candy counter!

  4. I love the smell when I walk into the candy store. I think it must smell like the magic room in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory where you can eat everything in the room.

  5. That is so cool. I love candy. What is your favorite kind?

    1. That's hard to say, because I like so many different kinds. But I think of the chocolate bars I like Nestle's Crunch the best, and I also like lollipops and candy necklaces.

  6. There are still candy stores, but there are also drugstores with candy. One time I went in a drugstore where they gave kids with quarters discounts! :P

    1. Really? Well since I get 50 cents (2 quarters) every week, I guess I would always get a discount, if I lived in your time!

  7. I'm sorry to say that people still get cavitites in the future, Julie. And they sure aren't fun! Lucky for me, I haven't gotten one in a while.
And yes, there are still stores (like grocery stores and places like that) that sell candy in the future, but there aren't any official "candy stores" in most places, which is really too bad. Your candy store looks outta site!

    1. You still get cavities and you don't have a lot of candy stores? Bummer. Lucky for me, I don't have any cavities, and I hope I don't get any!

  8. Julie you always bring back such memories! My school bus stop was in front of the little general store in our neighborhood. So all us kids would arrive early and buy candy before school. For 25 cents I could get a whole lot of candy! Thanks Julie, I love being reminded of when I was a kid.

    1. My allowance is 50 cents a week, and I usually spend about half of it on candy. (unless I find money in the couch cushions, then it's more!)I'm glad my time capsule reminds you of when you were a kid. Life in the 70s is outta site!
