Hello future readers!
Happy Independence Day! (OK, so I'm a day late...but I had so much fun!)
This year, my mom and I went on a picnic to celebrate the 4th with Shante', Raychel, Lisa, and their folks. (Lisa brought just her mom, her dad stayed home to take care of her grandma). We had a barbecue and pot luck. A pot luck is when everyone brings something yummy to share. We had a really groovy spread!
Guess what? My mom actually let me grill a couple of burgers for my friends all by myself! I never thought she'd let me do that. But I only got to do 2 burgers, and then Shante's dad took over. My mom said she was really proud of me for being so careful. (And for not burning the burgers!)
The grown-ups sat at another picnic table, but us kids wanted to sit on a blanket on the ground. And man, was it ever good! We ate hot dogs and hamburgers, corn on the cob, salad, watermelon, and washed it all down with some pink lemonade! I think we all ate until we were ready to bust! (Well almost!)
We were all full, but not too full for some Bomb Pops! The perfect treat on the 4th of July! We decided to work off lunch by dancing to the music from my radio!
"Shake shake shake...shake your booty."
Later on, Raychel's dad announced the 3 Legged Race! Us kids went first. It was Lisa and me vs. Shante' and Raychel. Lisa and I won!
When it was the grown-ups' turn, we all laughed until we cried! It's so funny to watch grown-ups playing kid's games! While our parents sat down to rest and eat pie, we decided to play "Blind Man's Bluff". In case you don't know what that is, it's like tag, only the person who is it gets blindfolded! If they're gonna run into a tree or something, we all have to yell "Stop!". We all put our feet in to see who was it.
"Engine engine number 9 going down Chicago Line. If the train goes off the track, do you want your money back? N-O spells NO and out you may go!"
We did this a few times until Shante' was the last one standing, so she was it!
We had a ball! All of us kept trying to trick her by whispering behind her and jumping out of the way, or tapping her on the shoulder and ducking so she couldn't tag us!
After all of us had a turn to be it, we were getting kinda tired, so we ate and drank more lemonade, and rapped. Pretty soon it started to get dark, and you know what that means? Sparklers and fireworks! Outta site!
Lisa's mom took a group picture. The perfect end to a far out day! I hope you all had a Happy 4th of July. I know we did!
Until next time, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman
Looks like you had an awesome day and the food looks delicious! Congrats on not burning the burgers!
ReplyDeleteThanks Flo! I had a dynamite time. I'm glad my mom is starting to let me do more grown-up stuff. She says she gonna start teaching me how to cook easy stuff so that sometimes I can make dinner! Far out!
DeleteHey Julie, you should try making grilled cheese sometime! It's really easy and it tastes so good.
Delete*Sunny
My mom fixes that for lunch sometimes. It's yummy, but maybe not something I'd wanna make for dinner. I think I wanna try spaghetti first. I don't think that's too hard.
DeleteCute story! I love all of your beautiful patriotic outfits and the lovely picnic set up. Great job grilling! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Farrah!
DeleteLooks like a lot of fun. Our 4th of July was rainy, kinda like 2 years ago. We were going to a soccer game with friends, but the rain cancelled the fireworks. We had fun going to see a movie instead.
ReplyDeleteSo fun about your potluck. People still have them in the future. I love hamburgers and hotdogs! And watermelon and pink lemonade. My family had baby back ribs that my mom made.
Happy 4th of July from the future!
Samantha
That's too bad about the rain and the fireworks. Maybe you can see them next year. I think it's super that people still have pot lucks in the future! I love tasting the stuff that other people make.
DeleteIt is sad, but a few people in our neighborhood shot off some later in the evening, so we got to see some.
DeleteI love potlucks, especially when we had big ones at our old church. My mom would make enchiladas or green bean casserole, which is really good. Where do you usually have potlucks?
Samantha
We have them at my church too, and neighborhood get-togethers.
DeleteFun. What is your favorite dish to bring? And what is your favorite dish to eat? I like enchiladas, macaroni and cheese casserole, and desert.
DeleteBy the way, I really enjoy your time capsule. It's so cool things see how the past has impacted the future. The 70s looks like a lot of fun
Samantha
I'm glad you're enjoying my time capsule! I like when my mom brings her macaroni and cheese! It's SO good! I really like it when other people bring fried chicken and pie (especially cherry) and chocolate cakes or cookies!
DeleteI love chocolate cake! My best friend always gets one of every kind of brownie at potlucks to find the best one. Pie is good, too. My favorite is chocolate, which my great-grandmother made a recipe for. I also love pecan pie.
DeleteDo you and your friends ever wonder about how the future will be? I sometimes do.
Samantha
*giggle* In almost every entry in this time capsule, I ask things about the future and sometimes what my friends think!
DeleteSo fun. What do you predict the future will be like?
DeleteSamantha
*giggling again* Maybe you should go all the way back to the beginning of my diary, and check out some of the things me and my friends think about the future. Some people have corrected me about some things. Some people tell me about some things...which I think are kinda weird, but then, maybe you think the 70s are weird too. I'm really happy you're enjoying my time capsule, but my mom says I gotta go take my bath now. Bye!
DeleteThanks. I only recently started following, so I will have to go check it out. I think the 70s are really cool. It's so fun to see how life was like in a different period of time, and to compare the past with today.
DeleteSamantha
Looks like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteIt was, and I hope you had fun, too!
DeleteI had a great Fourth of July, Julie, and I'm glad to hear that you did too! On Friday we went to a barbecue at my aunt and uncle's house (and went swimming in their pool!). Then on Saturday, we went to another one of my aunt's house for dessert. We had a lot of great treats-even peanut butter brownies! Yum!
ReplyDelete*Sunny
We had a swimming party at Jennifer's house last year on the 4th of July. Isn't it a groovy way to spend the holiday? And peanut butter brownies sound outta site!
DeleteHi Julie,
ReplyDeleteThey still have those same grills in our city park in 2015. Picnic food is always such a treat. It can turn a plain old burger into a feast!
Your future friend,
Fawn
Really? Wow! I guess some things never change. Those grills must be the sturdiest things ever!
DeleteOOPs! I meant that we still have that same "kind" of grill. (giggle!) Although as I think about it, some of them are in such poor shape that they could very well have been there since 1975. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteFawn
HAHAHAHA! Oh Ok, well, that's different. It would be really funny if no one had built new grills for 40 years!
DeleteLooks like a lot of fun! I saw an episode of Happy Days recently and I can see why you like it.
ReplyDeleteDid you or any friends watch the Major League Baseball All-Star Game? I did, and I thought it was fun. If you did, who were some of your favorite players?
DeleteNah, I really don't like sports that much, neither does my mom or any of the girls who are my friends. I don't know if the boys watch sports on television.. I know they like to play baseball sometimes.
DeleteFun. I am not into sports, either, but my brother loves watching the game. I like to look for players who used to be on my favorite team, which hasn't yet been established in your times.
