Homework At Shante's House

Hello future readers!

Hooray! It's finally October! And you know what that means? Halloween is coming! On Thursday, Miss LaSalle gave us 2 things to do for homework; review our vocabulary words for our Spelling test on Friday, and make 2 Halloween decorations each for our classroom. I always said she's the grooviest teacher in our school. I love it when we get Art for homework! So Shante' invited me, Susan and our new friend Bridget over, so we could work on our decorations together.

Shante' has a really groovy room! She shares it with her older sister Alicia, but she wasn't home.

Bridget really liked Shante's doll, Cecile, who was sitting on her bed.

And I liked that she had a snapshot of the 2 of us in Springfield Park taped to her mirror.

Shante' took some construction paper, crayons and scissors from her dresser drawer so we could got to work.

I asked Shante' if I could turn on her radio, so we could listen to music while we worked. It was almost time for Madman Mike. She said that was OK, and that she liked Madman Mike, too. Outta site!

And then we all got busy. It was so much fun! We were rapping about school, and how school is different here in Springfield than it was in Kansas when Bridget used to live, and in Michigan where Shante' used to live or in Arizona where Susan lived for awhile. Wow...I was the only one in the room who has always gone to school right here in Springfield!

We also were talking about Halloween. We were telling Bridget how much fun Halloween was here in Springfield; that Miss LaSalle takes us to the Pumpkin Patch and how last year we got to ride Cherokee the horse. We knew there was gonna be some big announcement in assembly next Wednesday about Halloween activities at school. We all couldn't wait to hear it!

Pretty soon we were finished! We laid all of our pictures out on the table. I thought they looked pretty far out!

I made the Trick Or Treat bag and the fat pumpkin, Susan made the ghost and the skinny pumpkin, Shante' made a black cat and a brown bat and Bridget made a witch and a black bat.

Just then, one of Shante's favorite songs, "Just A Little Bit Of You" by Michael Jackson came on the radio. She grabbed the hairbrush off her dresser and pretended it was a microphone! It was too funny!

If Shante' was gonna get up and sing, then the rest of us were gonna get up and dance! Bridget is a super terrific dancer!

Susan got in on the act with Shante' and starting singing into the "microphone" too!

It's always a groove when I get together with my friends. Especially when there's music! After the song was over, I had to go home to review my vocabulary words and eat dinner. But I don't think I've ever had so much fun doing homework! I wonder if kids in the future get to do fun homework like Art, or do you just do it all on a computer? I hope schools still do Art in your time. I think school would be really dull without Art class every week with Mrs. Taylor, and some of the projects we do in our regular class with Miss LaSalle, like making decorations. Gotta go now, future readers!

Until next time,
Your friend,
Julie Newman

  1. I love Shante's PJs, they are too cute! Yours are really adorable, too, Julie :) How funny that your friend Bridget is named that--my grandmother has a doll that looks exactly like her named Bridget, too! ;)
I am homeschooled so I don't get any homework, but I believe those in public school still do Art homework but they do some of their work on their laptop computers :)

  2. We're not wearing PJs! This was after school. Do PJs look like that in the future? Why do you go to school at home? Are you too sick to go to school? I saw an episode of "Family Affair where a little girl was too sick to go to school to they hooked up a walkie-talkie type thing so she could do her assignments with the class. Is that what you have to do? Laptop computer? A computer that goes on your lap? Hahaha! Very funny! Even Mr. Spock on "Star Trek" can't do that!

    1. Oops, sorry about that! They just reminded me a bit of some of my PJs and my doll's ;)
I am homeschooled since we think it's best and I'm in good health :) Though doing school over a walkie-talkie sounds fun, I am actually taught by my mom and we do all the same subjects as public school :)
Haha, yes, these computers are small enough to sit on your lap so they're called that ;)

  3. Hi Julie! I gave art for homework this weekend, so some things have not changed in the 21st century. I like your Stevie Wonder poster. He was so great on Sesame Street.

    1. That's groovy you still give Art as homework in the future. I think Velvet saw Stevie on Sesame Street. But that's not my poster, it's Shante's. I'm into David Cassidy.

  4. Looks like you guys were having a lot of fun! I always liked art class in school, but I don't think we ever got to do anything like that for homework, Miss LaSalle is a very cool teacher!

    1. She sure is. Am I ever lucky she's my teacher again. I'm sure Mrs. Johnson's a good teacher. But it's hard to believe there's anyone as good as Miss LaSalle!

  5. How fun. We are homeschooled as well, but we go to places to have classes with other homeschoolers. We don't do art there, but we all like to draw at home.

Love the decorations you made. You all did a great job.

Do you know what you are going to be for Halloween, Julie?

    1. I don't know if I'd like being homeschooled, but at least you do stuff with other kids who are too. Since I'm an only child, I think I'd get really bored. I love being with my friends, and playing on the playground, and eating in the lunchroom, and doing all the groovy holiday stuff we do. I'm not sure what I'm gonna be this year. I haven't gone to Woolworth's yet to pick out my costume.

    2. Fun. I like to use some of my clothes to create costumes.

      Your school sounds like fun.

  6. Your Halloween decorations turned out great! It was a really good idea to draw the candy for your trick or treat bag decoration. Looks yummy! You are all good artists! Your classroom will look very Halloween-y. Good luck on your vocabulary test!

  7. Sounds like you all had a great time at Shante's, Julie! :D
Shante would be sad to know that Michael Jackson isn't alive anymore in 2015. He died a couple of years ago, bit he is still very well known nowadays.
I'm homeschooled now, but when I went to public school, we hardly ever had Art homework, so you're lucky! The only time I ever did was in kindergarten. For Thanksgiving, we all had to cut out a paper turkey and make a costume for him/her. I dressed my turkey up like Santa Claus--with cotton balls for his beard! :D

  8. Oh, do you have arts and crafts stores in the 70s? We have tons of them nowadays, all over the US, where you can buy all kinds of art supplies and stuff for craft projects. They're some of my favorite places to shop.

I've also been working on some art myself lately, so if you'd like to check out my drawings, here's where you can find them:

    1. I know there's an art section at Conway's Department store w/ paints, glue, construction paper, pipe cleaners and stuff like that. And Woolworth's has some stuff too.

  9. So much fun! I love all the decorations you girls made - very cute! There is nothing better than homemade if you ask me.

    1. Yeah, I like homemade, but I also like those special decorations, you know the ones I mean, that your teachers put up every year, and they sell them at Woolworth's. I think they call them Beistles. (I had to ask my mom how to spell that!)

  10. How fun. I love decorating for Halloween. Fall colors are so pretty.

    1. I like Fall colors too. But since I live in California, there are not too many trees with those pretty colors. It's mostly green, sometimes brown and a few that get bare.

  11. What a fun day! I'm not familiar with that Michael Jackson song, but whatever gets you up singing and dancing with a hairbrush microphone is Dy-no-mite!

    1. Hi Melody!

Yeah, we had a groovy time. That song is from Michael Jackson's album (one he did without his brothers) called "Forever, Michael". I really like that album. Shante's favorite song from that one is "Dear Michael". It's all about a girl who writes to Michael 'cos she loves him, and he reads her letter and loves her too. I know Shante' wishes she could do that!
