What Happened in Gym Class

Hello future readers,

Every Friday at school, we have Gym class at 10 a.m.. Sometimes Gym class is really a drag, because I really don't like regular sports games that much, and we have to play basketball or volleyball. But sometimes, it's pretty fun, 'cos we get to have relay races, play dodge ball, or do tumbling like we did this past Friday. Miss LaSalle's class gathered around the mats, so we all get a turn to do cartwheels. Cheryl was first.

Far out! She's pretty good at this. Jennifer was next.

Yay! Good job, Jennifer! Then it was Jason's turn.

Even though Jason's good at tumbling, he'd rather be playing basketball. I was next.

I can do cartwheels OK, but I'm better at somersaults. I drive my mom crazy turning somersaults on the couch and on my bed!

Only I guess I didn't land the way I was supposed to, because I turned my left ankle and fell down on top of it! Ouch! All the kids gathered around me and kept asking questions like "Are you OK, Julie?", "Did you hurt yourself?",  and "What happened?"

My ankle felt like it was on fire! Melody helped me up and took me to the school nurse's office.

The school nurse checked my ankle. She told me it wasn't broken, and it wasn't even sprained, I just twisted it and made it sore. She wrapped my ankle, and called my mother to come pick me up. I had to stay off my feet all weekend, put ice on my ankle and keep it elevated. And on Monday at school, I can't run around at recess so my ankle won't get sore again.. *sigh* Man, all weekend in bed or on the couch! What a bummer! Mom took me home, put me to bed, put ice on my ankle, and gave me hot dogs for lunch.

Since this happened in the morning, it would be a few more hours before my friends came home from school, so I did my best to keep from being bored. I didn't even bother watching television, because at that time of day, there wasn't anything on but game shows, cooking programs, and soap operas. So I colored in my coloring book, read magazines, and listened to my radio. Would 3 o'clock ever come?

Finally school was out, and Kim and Jennifer came over to see me. All right!

We rapped and played some records. They told me the other kids all felt bad I got hurt, and they all missed me at lunch and recess. Aww...that was nice to hear. Some of the other kids were gonna stop by this weekend so I wouldn't get lonely and bored. I've got some really groovy friends.

So that's how I spent my weekend, future readers. Is there still gym class in the future?  Some of my friends think that kids in the future play basketball with rockets strapped to their backs. But I think the fire from the rockets would burn their tushies! Hahaha!

Until next time, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman

  1. Hi Julie,
Sorry to hear you sprained your ankle. You did look really cool doing that cartwheel though. I really love your orange gym pants. When I was a kid we had to wear gym uniforms. They were made of ugly heavy blue cotton with metal snaps. They were sleeveless, legless and had a collar. They kind of looked like rompers. I hated them. Yes, kids today still have gym class and little has changed about the curriculum. Thankfully, they no longer have to wear uniforms. Shorts, a t-shirt and sneakers are all that is required. Enjoy being pampered by your mom while you recuperate!

    1. Hi Fawn,

Actually I just twisted it. It's sore, but not swollen. Boy I'm glad we don't have to wear uniforms! We do have to wear sneakers, and comfortable clothing. I wear my warm-ups sometimes, other times, just pants with elastic in the waist. Jason will be bummed out to hear that kids don't play basketball with rockets on their backs. I think he watches too many science fiction movies!

  3. Yeah, still no rocket booster basketball in 2015. Sorry. Tell the boys there is a great Disney movie from 1961 called, "The Absent Minded Professor". It has a very funny basketball scene where the players can jump really high and far because they have an anti-gravity stuff on their shoes called "flubber".
    They'll love it!

    1. Hi Fawn,

We've seen that movie! Our movie house shows old Disney movies sometimes. I like the the Professor is the dad from "My Three Sons".

  4. Sorry Julie, I keep forgetting about the time difference between our lives. In 2015 we can rent all kinds of movies to play through our TVs at home. In the 70s you'll have to hope they show it sometime on "The Wonderful World of Disney" on Sunday nights.

    1. I like watching the Wonderful World Of Disney on Sunday nights after dinner with my mom. You can rent movies to watch on your TV? Weird!

  5. Sorry to hear you got hurt, but glad it's just twisted and not anything worse. Even so, that can hurt! Glad to hear that your friends came to visit, it can get pretty boring. And just so you know, daytime TV gets even more boring in the future! But gym class is still the same in the future.

    1. Thanks Flo,

It's feeling better today, but it's still a little sore. Now I know why the school nurse said I couldn't run around at recess today. I'm just glad I didn't break my ankle!

  6. Daytime TV is annoying in the future, Julie. All it is is news and preschool shows! And no rocket booster basketball yet, Julie.

    1. I'll admit, I do sometimes watch Sesame Street when I'm home from school. It reminds me of the good times I had when I was little. But I really like cartoons and sitcoms better.

  7. I hope your ankle is healing. It's no fun being laid up like that. Although you do get to catch up on somethings - like the latest Tiger Beat. Feel better soon.

    1. Well, some of my friends brought me candy and Archie comic books. Gotta save some of my allowance, so I can make another trip to "The Mad Platter" to buy the next issue of Tiger Beat!

  8. Molly: I can get movies on my phone. I try to explain it. Ya know how a tv works right? Imagine a tv you can HOLD! That plays games! But you can buy movies to put on them! I know it sounds totally cray-zay

    1. If that means crazy, than yes it does. I wonder if people in the future ever get anything done, since they can walk around watching TV. Even though that kinda sounds neat, I'm not sure if I wanna watch TV whenever I want like that. I think I'd get sick of TV after a while.

    2. Molly: oops sorry forgot the difference in slang... Cray-zay means so crazy it's ridiculous! Some people don't get stuff done but most people do because there's lots of other stuff to do! I read a magazine called "doll mag" that's all about dolls! And tell me, do they have a book series called Narnia in your time?

    3. Yes, I've seen those books at the library, but I'm not really into books with talking animals and trolls and castles and stuff like that. I like books about just everyday kids, like me. My favorites are Harriet The Spy, Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing, Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great, The Pain and The Great One, a little bit of Nancy Drew Mysteries, as well as Archie comic books and Dynamite magazine.
