An Afternoon at Woolworth's

Hello future readers!

Well, it's that time of year again...time to go costume shopping at Woolworth's! I love shopping there! There's always so much to see, and it always smells like popcorn, candy and plastic toys. Yesterday after the cartoons, I stopped by Robyn's house, and we walked over to Woolworth's together.

When we got there, we saw Danny, Kyle and Bridget.

Bridget was drinking a soda at the lunch counter.

Kyle was checking out the radios and tape recorders by the back counter.

Danny was in the Halloween section, checking out the costumes and the records.

We called out to them and each of them said Hi and gave us a wave.

Bridget finished her soda and walked over to us.
"Hi Julie, Hi Robyn", Bridget said. "You guys shopping for costumes?"
"Hey Bridget", Robyn began. "Nah, my mom got my costume already. But I need a new trick-or-treat pumpkin. Mine broke last year."
"Well, I need a new costume", I told Bridget. "I just haven't decided what to be for Halloween."
"Me neither", said Bridget. "Let's look together."

So Robyn went to look for a new pumpkin, while Bridget and I checked out the costumes.

"Hmmmm...maybe I should be Morticia Addams. I love watching 'The Addams Family'. "

"I wonder if I should be Batgirl. I've got red hair just like she does."

Meanwhile Danny was checking out a scary record, and Kyle zoomed in on the candy.

Bridget and I finally decided on our costumes.

"Outta site, Julie! I love Morticia!"
"You'll make a great Batgirl, Bridget."

"You gonna buy that spooky record, Danny?"
"Yeah. Mrs. Johnson borrowed a copy of this album from the library and played it for the class. It's really super."

"You're not gonna eat all that candy, are you Kyle?"
"Don't be goofy, they're for the trick-or-treaters. But I may help myself to a few pieces. Chocolate covered caramels are my favorite."

Well, it was just about time to leave. But before I paid for my costume, I wanted to look at the fish. The aquariums are so pretty.

As we walked home, I asked Robyn what costume her mom bought for her. She said I'd just have to wait 'til Halloween to find out, Oh man!

It's always a groove shopping at Woolworth's, especially for the holidays. Sometimes it's fun just looking around, even if I don't have any money. It gives me great ideas about what I want, and what gifts I should get for other people, like my mom. Since I only get 50 cents a week for my allowance, I can't really afford to get a lot at the department store, so I usually buy stuff from Woolworth's. I couldn't wait to go home and show my mom my costume! Halloween is gonna be dynamite!

Until next time, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman

    1. Hi Flo,

Yeah it is fun, especially at Halloween! When I showed my mom my costume, she looked at me and went "Da Da Duh Dum" *snap snap* and winked at me! She loves watching the Addams Family too!

  2. Fun! Can't wait to see you in your costume. Do you ever keep your old costumes to at in? We do, and it's fun to dress up and play.

    1. Well, since these costumes are made of plastic, they don't hold up too well. Usually they get a rip in them or the mask cracks, or the band pops loose. I usually don't save them. Sometimes the boys may keep their masks, or Kyle may draw one to pretend they're some of their favorite characters. but that doesn't last long either.

    2. That's too bad. Usually my older sister and mom help make costumes, or we use clothing we already have. My younger sister used some of her clear these to be a Munchkin from The Wizard of Oz.

    1. I think one of my favorite things about Woolworth's at Halloween is the costumes. I think it's so groovy that you can be almost anything you want. Halloween is gonna be so cool!

  4. Hi Julie,
You have such a pretty neighborhood. I think you will make a great Morticia Addams. She reminds me of Cher of Sonny and Cher, only with more makeup.

    1. Thanks, I think our neighborhood is pretty far out. I like Sonny and Cher, but I don't think Morticia and Cher look alike at all. Well, maybe the black hair, but that's all.

  5. Hi Julie,
I sure like the costume you picked. Kevin is going to be Captain America and CJ is going to be a pirate. Betta is going to be a fairy and I'm going to be a princess. Evelyn is going to be a clown and Lydia is going to be a witch. I hope I get lots of Tootsie Rolls cause that is my favorite candy.

    1. Thanks. I don't know who's wearing what this year, I guess I'll find out on Halloween. Are you guys all go Trick-or-Treating together? I hope you get Tootsie Rolls, and I hope I get Nestle's Crunch bars, 'cos those are my favorite!

  6. I loved Woolworths, they had everything. Sadly they are no longer around. I will never forget my Cinderella costume with the plastic dress and mask!

    1. Wow, no more Woolworth's? That's gotta be one of the saddest things I ever heard of! Where do you get your costumes? Your Christmas ornaments? Your lunchboxes when it's Back To School Time? No Woolworth's? *shakes head* I can't imagine life without it!

  7. Hi! Are any of your costume boxes marked Collegeville Costume Shop or Collegeville Flag Company? If yes, those are from our area of the country.

I can't wait to see what groovy things you and your friends do for Halloween!

  8. Hi Julie! This makes me remember going to Woolworths a bit later than your timeline when I was little. I really miss it! They had the best things. I always liked looking at the parakeets best! :)
