A Film and Fun on Valentine's Day

Hello future readers,

I hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day. I know I did. In our class we always pass out cards and have a party. But when we came in from the playground after recess, Miss LaSalle told us that we would also be watching a film in our class.

Outta site! We were all pretty happy about that. We don't get to see films in class very often. Sometimes we have a film strip, or maybe a Science or Social Studies lesson on the overhead projector, but must of the time, we watch films in the auditorium. So this was really a treat!

It was time to pass out Valentines! We all took out out folders.

Isn't it funny how Kyle had a flying saucer and Jason had a space creature? I wonder if they planned that? Anyway, Melody passed out all the Valentines. It was a real kick opening all of them. Even us girls liked the Batman cards Kyle and Jason passed out.

Then Miss LaSalle told us to clean up our Valentines and put the folders away so we could pass out the  cookies and candy. She said she could watch the film while we ate, just like in a real movie theatre. Isn't that groovy?

Miss LaSalle put the film reel on the projector  and started the movie. It was "The Red Balloon".

We have to use our chalkboard since we don't have a screen. I love this movie. Even though there isn't a whole lot of talking in it, (except the boy calling for his balloon), it's still really good. I think it's neat how the balloon followed the boy everywhere, even to school. Kim started crying when the mean boys popped it. But the best part is when balloons came from everywhere to take the boy into the sky at the end! We all cheered!

It was such a good movie. Do kids still watch films in school in the future? I like watching in the auditorium, but there's something really special about watching it in the classroom. I love holidays when we get to do fun stuff at school. I hope you all had just as much fun on Valentine's Day as I had.

Until next time, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman

    1. Yeah, Miss LaSalle's the coolest teacher ever! Even though we all love Mrs. Johnson, when we get our final report cards of the school year, and at the bottom is who your teacher will be for the next school year, all the kids hope to get Miss LaSalle just because she's so groovy.

  2. As we are homeschooled, I don't know if kids still watch movies in class. I know our mom will let us watch movies sometimes, especially movies based off books we are reading.

Happy Valentine's Day! I love how everyone in your class wore red. You all looked like you had a lot of fun.

    1. Oh OK. Not everyone wore red. Wendy and Cheryl were wearing purple and pink. Happy (late) Valentine's Day to you too!

    2. I guess I didn't notice that before. Pink and purple are still perfect for Valentine's Day, too.

  3. Hi Julie,
Looks like a fun party. Those cookies look delicious! :) I'm happy to say that kids still get to see movies in school but they are not shown from a projector but rather a DVD player. DVD stands for digital video disc. (I wish I could explain that more but I'm not very technically minded.) Love your vest!

    1. Hi Fawn,
The cookies and candy were really yummy. And I guess I'll just have to wait 'til I grow up to know what you're talking about. Sounds really confusing to me.

  4. Looks like you had a great Valentine's Day, Julie! I remember having so much fun in elementary school on VD and I loved passing out and receiving Valentines so much. Yup, the kids still get to watch movies during class sometimes and they still love it a lot. It's a nice treat. :)

    1. I love celebrating Valentine's Day in school. It's cool kids still watch movies, but I guess they're not films, but whatever those things are that Fawn was talking about. But I guess it's still fun for future kids, too!

    1. I like this film a lot too! I remember once when I went to Kim's house and we were watching a short film her dad rented on their movie projector. Well, her dad went to the bathroom when the movie was almost over, but he told us not to touch the projector. When the movie ended, the film went all the way to the other reel and it was going "slap slap slap". Man I hate that sound!

  6. Hi, Julie Ann! We still get to see movies in school sometimes. Xyra tells us the experience isn't the same as when her teachers, like yours, had to work the filmstrip and movie projectors on their own. Sometimes they bring in a TV with a DVD player or they play it through a laptop computer onto a white board or smart board. I'm sorry to bombard you with future jargon. I just wanted you to know the fun of seeing a movie in class is still around.
    Later!
