The Springfield Burger Bowl

Hello future readers,

Well, it's been raining for 3 straight days here in Springfield, but for once, I'm not complaining, (much), because our town has something brand new! I'm talking about the "Springfield Burger Bowl"!

It's a groovy new bowling alley that just opened up on the edge of town! Far out! On Thursday after school, I did some extra chores around the house, and my mom gave me some extra money besides my allowance. so I could go with my friends! My mom is the greatest! So this past Saturday, Stephanie, Melody Jennifer and I went down to the "Burger Bowl"!

I'm not really much of a bowler. But I like watching "Celebrity Bowling" on television. On one show, I saw the guy who played Pete on "The Mod Squad" make so many strikes, he won a car for a lady in the studio audience! He was dynamite! I've never seen anything like it! Even though I never be anywhere close to being as super as he is, I still wanted to check out this new place.

None of us have our own shoes or balls, so we rented them there. They have lightweight balls just for kids. Stephanie chose a pair of shoes.

I helped Melody find the right size, and Jennifer checked out the balls.

I'm not really crazy about wearing shoes other people have worn, but since this was a new place, I don't think they've been worn a lot yet.

We got a score sheet and wrote in our names. We really weren't all that sure how to keep score, but I remember a little from "Celebrity Bowling". It didn't matter anyway, we just wanted to have fun!

I wanted to play "Best Ball" like they do on the TV show, but Stephanie reminded me that this bowling alley isn't set up like that.

So we decided to play 2 at a time and take turns keeping score. Steph and I were up first.

Hey! I knocked down some pins! All right!

So did Stephanie! Right on!

Next we tried to get spares. I didn't knock down any more of mine.

But Stephanie did.

Melody and Jennifer were up next. Stephanie kept score.

They did pretty alright, too.

We all had a dynamite time! Bowling is a pretty groovy way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I only got one spare, but once I knocked down 9 pins! And Stephanie got a strike! We all cheered like crazy! It was so much fun!

My final score was 48 (I think!), but I didn't care. It was fun just to bowl!

After all that bowling, we were all pretty hungry. Since this place was called the "Burger Bowl" we wanted to see how good the hamburgers were!

The burgers were OK, but I like the ones at Sam's Snack Shack better.  The french fries and milkshakes were pretty good, though.

Do people still go bowling in the future? Maybe you just play on a computer screen, or maybe you have robots that play for you. I hope not, because it wouldn't be as much fun as playing for real. I know the other kids are gonna like this place.  I hope I'm able to come back soon.

Until next time, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman

  1. Looks like a fun place Julie! Yes, people still bowl in the future. AND they can play it on a computer or on a game console that hooks into the TV. That's the best way to play it because you still get some exercise because it uses the same types of motion as it does for real bowling. I used to bowl a lot, but it's been a few years since I went. I agree with you about the shoes, I used to have my own when I bowled a lot.

  2. The Burger Bowl is a really fun place. I'm glad people still bowl in the future, but I'm kinda confused over that game console stuff. How do you get exercise playing with something that hooks into your television? Weird!

  3. Hi Julie,
About 40 years ago my husband and I bowled in a league sponsored by his job. I was not very good but got an award for "Most Improved Bowler" at the end of the season. 15 years later my sons bowled on a Saturday morning league when they were teens. And 15 years after that I played in a duck pin league with my daughter-in-law. (Duck pins have smaller balls and pins.) Although I've never been very good I have enjoyed the friendships made while having some fun.
I hope you will continue bowling. It is a great way to spend time with friends.

    1. Wow Fawn, even though you don't think you were very good, it sounds like you were a pretty groovy bowler, (you had to be better than a 48!). I think bowling is a lotta fun, and it's always cool to have fun with my friends!

  4. That's so cool, Julie. Kids in the future still bowl, and some places have free bowling for kids during the summer. You have to pay to rent the shoes, though.

One thing we used to do when we bowled was keep a record of our scores. that way, we could see if we were getting better. I bet you're going to be an amazing bowler in a couple of months, Julie. Maybe you and your friends could form teams and compete. All in good fun, of course.

Thanks for sharing. Hope the weather clears up so you can enjoy some sunshine.

    1. Hi Melodie,

It;s nice to know that kids still bowl in the future. This was just something I did for fun. It's really not a sport I would take too seriously. But the Burger Bowl is a great place to spend time with my friends.

  5. My favorite thing about future bowling is that you can do it without a ball! There is a gaming device that hooks up to your television so you swing your arm while holding the game controller and it's like swinging the ball down the lane but no weight which is great for my bad wrists!

    1. Hi Nonna,

I still don't understand what that means. I can't see bowling without a ball, but I guess if you have bad wrist than I guess it's OK. I guess there are some things about the future I will never understand (until I grow up).

  6. Hi, Julie Ann! Do any of your friends have an Atari game console with pong? Xyra tells us she and Lady Grey played that when they weren't playing Barbies or outside. You know how Pong is on a screen? Well, in the future there is a new type of Atari that uses a type of camera to see your movements then translates them into the game. That's what the others mean about bowling on screen without a heavy ball. I think you'll love it when you get here. ;-)

I got to go bowling one time with Xyra and her friends. It was a lot of fun. One of the other things about future bowling is that a computer keeps score for you.

Looks like you and your friends had a great time!

    1. Huh? I have no idea what you're talking about.

      *From Julie's doll mom, Sharry:*

Telstar (a video console w/o cartridges) came out when I was about 10 or 11. That would be '76 or '77. It's 1975 for Julie, so she wouldn't know what that is.

    2. Darn, I checked Atari before mentioning it and it said 1972, but that may have been in Japan. (giggles) Could also have been referencing the standing arcade games you'd find in bowling alleys. So sorry.
