The Springfield Elementary School Talent Show!

Hello future readers,

Well, school's almost out for the summer! Last Wednesday we had our last assembly for the school year, and we had a talent show! It was super outta site! We had lots of acts and lots of fun! Robyn and I peeked through the curtain and saw all the kids sitting and waiting for assembly to begin.

After the 6th graders finished Color Guard, Mrs. Taylor came on stage and gave the usual announcements, and reminded all of to have our desks cleaned out by next Monday. And then she announced the first act.

"Presenting Cheryl Castlebury playing "Fiddle In The Sky" on her violin."

She was really far out! I was surprised she knew how to play such an upbeat popular song. Normally, Cheryl's mom only wants her to play classical music. Right on, Cheryl! The next act was Bridget doing a ballet routine to some classical piano music.

Wow, she was really good too! I guess all those lessons at the Community Center paid off! After Bridget, Kyle and Marc gave a karate demonstration to the song "Kung Fu Fighting".

Dynamite! I know Jason really liked that act with all the "Hi-yahs", and kicks and body throws like in those Kung Fu movies on television. Then Mrs. Taylor announced the Baton Club!

"Presenting the Springfield Elementary Baton Club featuring Julie Newman, Robyn Brooks and Jennifer Murray!"

We came out on stage and did routines to "Walking In  Rhythm" by The Blackbyrds,  and "Doctor's Orders" by Carol Douglas.

I could tell Mrs. Taylor was proud of us, 'cos she clapped really hard!  Everyone was ready for the last act, 'cos it was Danny's group, "Loud and Proud"!

They sang "You Got the Sunshine" by The Partridge Family, ("Yahoo!), and "A Horse With No Name" by America. They were fantastic! Almost like a real band! And they weren't even playing with a record!

And that was our talent show! All of the acts were just super. We all had a lot of fun. School's out next Wednesday,  so my next entry will be during summer vacation!

Until then, future readers,
Your friend,
Julie Newman

  2. Hi Julie,
I used to play the violin. My best friend and I took lessons at school from the 4th grade to the 10th grade. She was much better at it than I was. I haven't played since then and probably could not even play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" if my life depended on it.
Tell Kyle and Marc that when they grow up they will get to see the movie, "Karate Kid". I know they will love it. Also tell Bridget that when she grows up she will get to see a movie called "Flash Dance". She looks just like the lead character in her black tights.
You've got a lot of talented kids in your class!

    1. Hi Fawn,

It's groovy you took violin lessons. I don't play a musical instrument (unless you count my radio! HAHAHA!). And I think Bridget Kyle and Marc will think I've lost my mind if I told them movies from the future. "Where's your crystal ball, Julie?" *sigh* But I'm glad you liked the photos from our little show.

  3. Hi Julie,
Are Camp Echo Hill and Camp Wilderness going to get together for another talent show this summer? It looks like Loud and Proud could steal the show!

    1. Hi Kevin,

You know, I'm not sure. My mom gets letters from the camp director, but she never tells me about the activities, 'cos she wants me to be surprised. Any anyway, I don't think Danny wants to drag his whole drum set up to camp!

  4. Hi Big Funny Feet,
You girls look fab in your twirl costumes! Come on, tell the truth, how many times have you bonked each other on the heads with those batons during practice?
Just kidding! I can't even walk and chew gum at the same time so I'm a little envious of your routine. It looks like so much fun!
    Love across the miles,

    1. Hi Vivienne,

Well, no one has ever gotten bonked, but we've dropped batons a few times, though. I bet you could twirl if you wanted to. It's really not that hard. Maybe I can teach you the next time I come to WV.

      Love Big Funny Feet! (Julie)

  5. Congratulations. You looked absolutely fantastic, Julie. I can tell you and the Baton Club worked really hard.

Do you have any big plans this summer?

    1. Thanks Melodie. Right now the only thing I know for sure is that I'm going to Camp Echo Hill. But that's not 'til August. I'm hoping to see Vivienne some time this summer, but we haven't made any plans yet.

  6. What a great show! I wish I had seen it live! I always wanted to learn baton twirling, but mom got me ballet lessons instead. You guys were all so great!

    1. Hi Brenda!

Baton twirling is lotsa fun, and pretty easy, once you get the hang of it. I remember my mom signed me up for a little kiddie ballet class when I was 6, but I didn't really like it. I'd rather do fast dances to songs I hear on the radio!
